Five Elements for Healthy Baby Sleep

Updated: Apr 1

Navigating the realm of healthy sleep and sleep training can be overwhelming, especially with the abundance of information available. If you find yourself drowning in a sea of advice, take a break from scrolling and join us on a journey to build a solid foundation for your little one's sleep routine.

Creating this framework has been on my mind for a while now. I'm striving to find better ways to communicate what healthy sleep is all about. This year, my focus is on discussing healthy and flexible sleep habits more than just sleep training, as there is much more to it than simply letting your baby cry.

Sleep Needs: Decoding the Magic Number

Your baby's age plays a pivotal role in determining the magic number of sleep hours they require during the day and night. Knowing how many hours your baby needs is crucial; it's essentially where you start. Not sure how many hours? This article can help.

Crafting the Perfect Schedule

It's not just about the quantity of sleep but also the timing. Crafting an age-appropriate schedule tailored to your baby's unique needs ensures they get the most out of their precious ZZZs. Click here to see some sample schedules.

Creating a Soothing Bedtime Routine: A Calming Transition

Routines provide a sense of security for babies, toddlers, and even adults. A consistent, soothing routine helps your little one transition from awake time to sleepy time. Every time you start the routine, they will know that sleep is the next thing.

There is no such thing as the perfect bedtime routine because 'perfect' is whatever works for you. The most important thing is that this routine is fun, soothing, and consistent.

Sleep-Friendly Environment

The sleep environment plays a crucial role in promoting restful sleep. Explore how room-darkening shades and a white noise machine can transform your baby's sleep space into a serene haven, blocking out disturbances for a more peaceful slumber.

Protip: Create a sleep-friendly environment when you start the bedtime routine. Play some lullabies as background music and use a soothing fragrance like lavender.

Independent Sleep

This is what we want to achieve—the ultimate goal. In simpler terms, independent sleep means that after our enjoyable bedtime routine, we put our babies down in their cribs, give them a big hug or kiss, and leave the room. And then, we see them the next day. Independent sleep means that even when they wake up in the middle of the night (as we all do), they have the ability to go back to sleep on their own.

For some babies, this comes more easily than for others. Their sleep needs are met, and they naturally learn how to do it on their own without much guidance. But then, there are babies who need our support—a little extra help to let go of the sleep crutches we’ve created.

Start by practicing a little every day at bedtime. A baby is never too young to start practicing. The goal isn’t for your baby to sleep independently overnight but rather to offer small opportunities for practice each day.
